Institutional Strengthening of NWAB

ONGOING PROJECTS:

Bhutanese Paper Factory

Objective: To preserve and promote the age-old Bhutanese traditional art of papermaking and increase household income of the communities.

The Paper Factory was constructed in the eastern part of Bhutan since the local communities in this district have traditional expertise in handmade paper manufacturing.  A Daphne tree grows in abundance in this district. Thus, this project has a great potential to tap the local resources which can be used to benefit the local communities.

In 1992, late Dasho Ugyen Dorji, Chairperson of Tashi Group of Companies and a well wisher of NWAB donated a paper unit in eastern part of Bhutan.  Since then, NWAB has been manufacturing Bhutanese Paper from the unit.  In 2000 under a grant provided by the Partners in Development Programme of the UNDP, a low cost new factory building was constructed in a new site.  In 2005 with a funding from Australian High Commission a one storey building was constructed for staff quarter.
